Christianity is more than religion, it is indeed a culture: an integrated system of beliefs, traditions, ideas, customs, products, disciplines, even technology today that constitute the life of Christian community and the body of Christ.

Cultural Mandate is theology of transformation of person and place.

Christ in Culture or Cultural Mandate is where theology of person and place come together to form one transformational force.

Theology of person is expressed in:

  • Jesus interaction with the women at the well
  • Jesus interaction with Nicodemus
  • Jesus interaction with Zacchaeus

Jesus interacting with people and through the interacting with people who experience transformation, they went back and engage in the transformation of place.

The transformation of person leads to the transformation of place.

Cultural mandate is presenting the transforming power of Christ to a person and that person become ignited and filled with spiritual desire to see the transformation of their community.

The Bible is not only talked about transformation of community but also transformation of generations.

It begins with something that very critical, which is with clearly articulated worldview (cosmology).

1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.

John 1:1-5 (NLT)

In the ministry of reconciliation, the objective is to return or back to original oder and it begin with the restoration of individual which is the element of society.

If you don’t know your purpose, someone can give you a purpose that is not your purpose and all your time, energy, and effort will be engaged in the distraction.

People will move from place to place, from church to church, from job to job, from relationship to relationship. from image to image, all because they lack of focus.

In the absence of focus, they experience this emptiness where they are and they short of satisfaction span with whatever it is they are doing. So they bored very quickly and every times they make a change, they think that this change will satisfy their emptiness and deal with their confusion, but in reality is they lack focus.

You need three things in order to have focus:

  1. Clearly articulated worldview (Cosmology)
  2. Set of core values
  3. Set of core purposes

It’s simply your understanding of the origin and development of the universe.

Not just physically but specifically in term of human society.

How did it begin? How did it develop? How did it get to where we are today?

If it is not clearly articulated, our thinking can’t be focus.

Bible inform us how everything started, and how it developed to where we are today.

We have Biblically-informed-cosmology.

Your value is the things that most important to you

What you stand for?

What you life for?

What you die for?

What you willing to pay the price for?

You can say with you mouth if you value something that when we look your action–how you spend your time, money, effort, etc.–It will really tell us what you really value.

You core value is critical because it protects your thinking.

Actions come from thought

Thoughts govern actions

Set of core values protects your thought and thereby influences your action before you do them.

Law is second strike capacity which mean cannot be into effect until you break it, but Word of God and Holy Spirit has FIRST STRIKE CAPACITY cause they engaged the human heart, conscience, and mind before the act is committed (holding the individual accountable before).

Conscience is judicial aspect of human experience. Your conscience cannot make you do right or wrong. It simply judge what you do.

In the book Romans chapter 2 stated that our conscience is either accuse or excuse our actions.

Why am I here determine what I am doing while I am here.

Your core purposes guide your activity.

Don’t confuse MOVEMENT with PROGRESS

Just because you are engaged in movement does not mean you are experiencing progress (It’s called going in circle)

In the other words, you must CLEAR on what is your purposes are, either the purpose of your ministry or the purpose of your own personal life. Otherwise, you don’t know what to reject or to accept in term of what you going to be involved with and even who you are going to get involved with, because your values and purposes screen out your relationship.

When man falls into SIN, our values drives by selfishness and our purposes were corrupted.

When God comes to a person life:

  • He gives them a different world view
  • He gives them a new set of values
  • He gives them a new sense of purposes

As a result, you’re a focused person and you will get things done.

If you have consistency, you will have security. As you matured, you will become more consistent.

Jesus consider a cosmos is a system. A system that enslaved human.

The system that promises to serve and please but only desire to enslave and dominate

Sin is a system and cosmic

Jesus’ mission to the earth is both COSMIC and ANTHROPOLOGICAL.

It’s cosmic because in fact sin is not begin with Adam. It’s already existed and enter to the world through Adam.

Sin is already existed in cosmic level before it’s existed in human level (anthropological).

Gate of Hell is about protecting the system.

So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. (John 5:19 NLT)

The truth will set you free from the system.

Edward Gibbon in his book “The Rise and Fall of Roman Empire” observe FIVE THINGS or REASONS CHRISTIANITY’S INFLUENCE on the Roman Empire:

  1. The uncompromise zeal of the Christian conviction (the absence of a narrow unsocial spirit).
  2. Doctrine of present and future life with improvement of the human condition.
  3. The miraculous power experience in the Christian Church
  4. The pure and austere moral and spiritual discipline
  5. Uniting presence.

Christ in culture is not becoming the culture.

Christ in Culture is not taking corruption and value low moral standard and ethic of the culture.

Christ in culture is not foresaking loyalty to Jesus and loyalty to the local church and becoming accomplishes with the culture.
